There is now an extension from the previous head of the Greenway to the small field across the railroad tracks from the duckpond! For those not familiar with it, the Greenway last year started across the tracks and about 1/2 mile west on Spalding Drive. Now you can get to it by simply crossing the tracks. :)
The idea of a city park was started a number of years ago as a project by 8th graders (I think) at Spalding . The city liked the idea so the students and city people worked on raising funds and the idea took off. It has been built in several phases, the latest is what you can now see across the tracks. Today the Greenway is a popular place to walk in Collegedale.
It runs on city property, or city acquired property along the railroad track and Wolftever Creek. It starts (now) near SAU, just across the tracks from the duckpond. It runs along the creek past Wolftever Elementary to another duckpond near Four Corners, then turns and goes another 1/2 mile or so to the Imagination Station (main part of the city park), Library, and City Hall complex.
It is paved all the way, but there is plenty of green space on each side to play in. I have found many places to be excellent photo ops or play excuse ops. :) Run, blade, bike, walk, picnic or play, the Greenway is a wonderful way to pass time with friends.
Be sure to stop and wade in the creek, visit the (relatively) new Veterans Memorial Park area, be a kid again at the Imagination Station, or check out a book at the library. Membership is free last time I checked, and it's a good excuse for some excercise!
Chattanooga has a similar "corridor" park, called "The RiverWalk".
